Encountering Suffering (John 9:1-41)

Dwayne's preaching on John 9:1-41 and what it means to encounter suffering. Everyone suffers. Some of us go through intense suffering. Suffering impacts us physically, emotionally, mentally, and relationally. One of the great oppositions to our faith is the depth of suffering both in the world around us; with war, famine, natural disasters, and disease; as well as personal suffering. Jesus came face to face with suffering both in His ministry and in His death. He models both how we can endure suffering as well as how we can walk with those who are suffering.

Encountering The Self-Assured (Mark 10:31)

Encountering Outsiders (Matthew 15:21-28)

What does it mean to encounter outsiders? A desperate mom approaches Jesus to free her daughter from the demonic. He is in Gentile territory. She is a Canaanite, a Syrophoenician, a Gentile. She is outside the covenant and the covenant people. The disciples want Jesus to send her away... they are on retreat. Jesus even refers to her as a dog to test her faith. She calls Him Lord three times and knows He is the Son of David, the Messiah. She understands that even a crumb from the Master’s table is worth more than the bounty of any banquet or feast. Jesus declares she has great faith!

Encountering Rejection (John 4:1-42)

What does it means to encounter rejection? She came to the well at noon. She was ostracized. Everyone in town gossiped about her. She was a Samaritan and one of the most unlikely converts, yet salvation is about God extending His grace to us. Jesus revealed to her that He is the Messiah. God’s grace so overwhelmed her that she ran to the very people she was avoiding, declaring what Jesus had done for her. Many believed. People falsely believe they are beyond the grip of God’s grace, often believing they have committed the unpardonable sin, yet God can save anyone. Our salvation rests on the accomplished work of Jesus Christ.

Encountering Religion (John 3:1-17)

What does it means to encounter religion? Nicodemus was a religious leader of his day who would have been faithful in his Bible reading, prayer and fasting disciplines (and in all aspects of the law). He would have had large portions of Scripture memorized, yet he didn’t have a personal relationship with God. He sees something strikingly different about Jesus and recognized Jesus has a connection with God that he doesn’t have. He was religious but not saved. Jesus lets Nicodemus know that he must be born again to have a relationship with God. Many religious people today believe they are saved yet they don’t have a relationship with God and need to be born again.
